This paper mainly has an investigation and optimization to high power ytterbium doped double-clad continuous wave fiber laser, the center wavelength is 1080 nm. The steady-state rate equation of ytterbium ion was studied and a numerical simulation was finished by using MATLAB software. The relationship between the output laser power and the experimental parameters was studied; the optimum fiber length was got. A high power ytterbium doped double-clad continuous wave fiber laser was built, the pump source is 915 nm LD, the cavity of laser is consisted of fiber Bragg grating and the gain medium is ytterbium doped double-clad fiber. In order to avoid the damage of high power laser density to the fiber end face, a fiber End Cap was designed and manufactured. At the same time, the quality of the fiber End Cap was tested by high power continuous wave fiber laser and the laser beam quality was studied and optimized. The experiment results indicate that the high power ytterbium doped double-clad continuous wave fiber laser with End Cap can output 507 W laser steadily and the end surface of the double-clad fiber is not damaged. The center wavelength of the laser is 1080 nm, the efficiency of the fiber laser with End Cap is 64.05%,x direction and y direction of the M2 is 2.10 and 2.24 respectively.
