In this paper, the zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence set design is investigated and ap-plied in wireless communication system.First, to overcome the lack of flexibility and the flaw of only considering the property of ZCZ in the existing construction of ZCZ sequence set, the factorized generation of ZCZ sequence set is proposed. The generation process is the multiplication of matrixes with the coefficient matrixes added during each of the iteration. At the same time, the properties of ZCZ and Nonzero Correlation Zone (NCZ) are considered:In terms of ZCZ, the length achieves the expect boundry Ze; In terms of NCZ, the coefficient matrixes are changed during the generation process to find the lower maximum amplitude of side lobe values in period autocorrelation and all values in period cross-correlation. Specially, the length of middle nonzero area ZMN and middle zero area Zmz in NCZ is proved in the factorized generation using interleaving technique.Second, to reduce the large amount of correlation computational complexity that impedes the application of ZCZ sequence set, based on the characteristics of the factorized generation of ZCZ sequence set, the corresponding period efficient correlators are designed. For both multi-plication and addition, the time computational complexity of correlation of L length sequence is reduced from O (L2) to O (L (lgL)). And if the elements of ZCZ sequence set belong to{±1} or{±1,±j}, then multiplication is substituted by shifting operation, which is more simple in application.Third, the ZCZ sequence set is applied in single carrier multiple-input multiple-output fre-quency domain equalization (SC-MIMO-FDE) communication system. First of all, the joint timing synchronization (TS) and channel estimation (CE) is achieved using the constructed ZCZ sequence set:The long enough ZCZ length is there to serve the optimal CE; And the properties of NCZ are in favor of performance of TS. Meanwile, a new algorithm called Twice Section-maximum Algorithm, is put forward to eliminate energy interference among channels from different transmitting antennas to the same receiving antenna. And with the aid of efficient correlator, not only the performance of joint TS and CE is promoted, but also the computational complexity of it is decreased. Then, the ZCZ sequence set is used in the design of the pream-ble of SC-MIMO-FDE system. With the properties of ZCZ, NCZ and efficient correlator, the ZCZ sequence set performs the operation of frame detection, automatic gain control, frequency synchronization, TS, CE, and the identification of the end of preamble sequence.
