As more and more diverse applications of communication satellite, switching requirement complexity in satellite network is also increasing. Bent-Pipes and regenerative payloads used in traditional satellite transponder can not meet the switching requirement complexity in satellite network. Therefore, we propose a high-speed switching technology with flexible forwarding based on variable bandwidth rate. The network, which supports 16 ports and 512 timeslots per port, increases the flexibility of switching network by bundling several adjacent timeslots and changing switch policy with no delay during switching, as well as supports multicast and broadcast. This paper focuses on the design and on-board verification of flexible switching network. This paper, which comes from laboratory research project “Research on an efficient switching technology with flexible forwarding”, proposes a large-capacity and high port rate flexible switching network. First of all, an outline of the overall design of the network structure was introduced in this paper after a detailed analysis of the design requirements, and also made a brief description of main modules in the network structure; Then, the switch moudle functions and implementation of switching network as well as it's sub-modules is introduced in detail; Finally, we simulated the function of switching network and it's sub-module by using Modelsim software, and made a on-board verification of switch function by building hardware verification platform. The test results show that switching network can switching in excellent performance in accordance with the established switch policy and meet the design needs of flexible switching network.
