Oil spill incidents occur frequently, how to identify the types of oil spill is very important for removing the greasy dirt and the protection of marine ecology timely and effectively. The methods commonly used to identify the type of oi are based on the analysis of determination of the content of a certain component(such as sulfur, aromatic hydrocarbon, aliphatic hydrocarbon) in the oill by sampling, such methods are, however, trivial and time consuming. In recent years, using laser radar recognition technology is proposed for the detection of oil spill. The new technology of identifying oil types by laser scattering characteristics is discussed in this paper, especially for the study of the backscattering characteristics of the ship detection equipment. In this paper, we first introduce several methods to identify the target by the target's scattering characteristics. The concept of bidirectional reflectance distribution function and hemispherical reflectance is introduced to lay the foundation for further understanding of the scattering characteristics of the target. A theoretical analysis of the backscattering characteristics of oil film with different wavelength laser irradiation is carried out. Finally, the experimental platform is set up, and experimental study on the laser backscattering characteristics of oil film are given. A feasible method for oil product identification is presented based on the analysis of the experimental data..Due to the influence of background noise and receiver noise, it can cause error of the echo signal in the measurement. So the laser signal is modulated, and the frequency selective amplifier in the experiment is used to suppress noise, to amplify the echo signal and to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, for the light intensity sensing method, the scattered signal is related to the incident light power. Therefore, a kind of intensity balance technique is proposed, which can eliminate the influence of the incident light power on the experimental results, so that the accuracy and reliability of the experiment are greatly improved.
