Construction and operation of the national infrastructure and development of economy and culture are closely linked to information security. Traditional way of encryption can not meet the demand of society any more, and it has been an urgent problem to seek a high security and strong ability against attacks. Sensitivity to initial conditions of chaos makes it become an important research direction in the field of encryption. And fractional order chaotic system is a hot research field in chaos, when applied to image encryption, it has advantages over integer order chaotic system due to its complex topological structures.Many studies on fractional order chaotic systems and secure communications have been carried out, however, switching fractional order chaotic system and its application to image encryption have not been explored yet. In this paper, a new switching fractional order chaotic system is proposed, containing fractional order Chen system and the other two fractional order systems. Chaotic attractors and dynamical analyses including Lyapunov exponent, bifurcation diagram, fractal dimension, dissipation, stability and symmetry are shown firstly. After that, some circuit simulations through Multisim are presented. By controlling switch k1 and k2, switching among the three fractional order chaotic subsystems can be realized. Finally, we apply the switching fractional order chaotic system to image encryption using exclusive or(XOR) encryption algorithm and introduce the process of encryption and decryption, histogram analysis and key space analysis. The switching system could increase randomness and improve speed of encryption. As a result, the switching fractional order chaotic system has a good application prospect.
