With the comprehensive coverage of 3G network and the popularity of the 4G network, corresponding energy consumption is also growing at a staggering rate.Furthermore, it has been reported that energy consumption of mobile networks is growing much faster than information and communication technology on the whole. However, in order to further improve the capacity of the whole network, 5G network puts forward the concept of dense network, which will consume more energy. Therefore, we should not only focus on improving the data rate, capacity or spectral efficiency, but also begin to focus on reducing the energy efficiency. In the thesis, energy efficiency based on sleep mode and CoMP in wireless cellular networks is focused on. First of all, the development history of the wireless cellular and the research background and significance of energy efficiency are introduced, and some recent researches on energy efficiency are reviewed. Then, the two key techniques including base station sleeping and CoMP used to improve energy efficiency are introduced. Next, the system model, the energy efficiency indicator and the loss and fading model is illustrated in detail. Furthermore, we introduce two existing algorithms:base station sleeping with static clustering strategy(SMSC) and base station sleeping with dynamical clustering strategy(SMDC). Based on the above two algorithms, we propose two new algorithms in which the cluster size is variable through traversal algorithm(SMDC-TA) and greedy algorithm(SMDC-GA) respectively. Finally, a simulation platform based on Matlab is designed and four algorithms(SMSC, SMDC, SMDC-TA and SMDC-GA) are applied to dense network scenario on this platform. Simulation results show that the rank from best to worst according to the energy efficiency is SMDC-TA, SMDC-GA, SMDC and SMSC.
