Housing And Class Identity Of Urban Residents: An Empirical Study

Based on the perspective of wealth stratification,this paper studied the relationship of housing which is as an important symbol of wealth and urban residents' identification.Per the empirical data of "Survey on the Living Conditions of Metropolitan Residents from 2014 to 2015",the paper founded that housing stratification phenomenon is more obvious is Beijing,Shanghai and Guangzhou.There is a significant correlation between housing factors which represented by "housing quality" and "symbol distinction" and stratum identification.There is a positive correlation between housing quality factors and stratum identification,which included the ownership of housing,housing market value,housing area and other factors.And living in high-level residential areas such as the higher degree of community or better property management will increase the residents of the upper-class identification.After the data were processed by the method of multiple imputation,the result confirmed the key role of housing in interpreting the identity of the residents.The article points out that in the current society of China,it differs from traditional occupation based class identification.On the contrary,it has gradually formed the class identification of wealth based represented by housing.Accordingly,in the study of class identification,the perspective of the housing can provide a new and synthetic framework of analysis and explanation for the class identification research.
