English vocabulary plays an essential role in English teaching;vocabulary teaching also gradually draws the attention of various teachers.Witsen(1979)stated that perception was important to teaching, which could be accomplished through the provision of planned sensory experiences in vision, language, kinesthesis and touch.Perception or understanding of the meaning of the target points depends to some degree upon the integration of the various senses.Perceptual modes of presentation, which are proposed by Kulvicki in 2007,are useful and effective ways of presenting new words with the help of stimulating students’ perception, including visual, auditory and other sensations. The messages that are conveyed in vocabulary teaching will be reinforced through the various senses and previous experiences of students. This study is an application of the perceptual modes of presentation in English vocabulary teaching in a primary school. There are altogether two research questions in this study: 1.What are the effects of perceptual modes of presentation on students’ vocabulary learning in primary schools? 2.What are the changes of students’ attitudes towards English vocabulary learning in primary schools?100 students in two classes in XX Primary School are chosen as subjects to figure out above questions. One class is the experimental class(EC)and the other is the control class(CC).Each class contains 50 students and the two classes adopt two different presentation modes respectively. An empirical study was carried out during a semester to check the effects of perceptual modes of presentation with two questionnaires, two interviews,pre-test,five unit tests,a mid-term test as well as a post-test.The results indicate that the perceptual modes of presentation have positive effects on students’ achievements and attitudes towards primary English vocabulary learning.
