| The passive voice is not only an important grammatical phenomena in English, but also one of the main research contents in the field of linguistics.Structuralism generally view passive sentence from the perspective of sentence pattern transformation;while transformational-generative grammar consider that passive sentence is derived from the displacement of active sentence, actives and passives have the same deep structure.Affected by structuralism and transformational-generative grammar,in the process of the passive voice teaching, teachers usually pay attention to the sentence pattern transformation only, ignoring the grammatical significance of passive voice.Students are able to master the transformational rules, but unable to understand the semantic features of passive voice, which makes the choose and proper use of passive voice still a difficult point in grammar learning for high school students. To solve this problem, this thesis studies the passive voice teaching from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. In cognitive grammar, grammar is meaningful.Language structure is represented by usage-based model, and the meaning of an expression includes not only the represented concept contents, but also the construal manner of human to events. We can recognize and understand the same situation in different manners according to our mental experience, such ability is called “construal” by Langacker. And passive voice just construes an event from the perspective of an affected entity,it has its own grammatical significance, not deriving from the transformation of active voice. The choice of the view of the language user determines the choice of voice, the process of the choice of the passive voice is a meaning construction process,as well as a construal process, which is a process that the speaker construes an event from the perspective of the patient and represents the result of the construal. This thesis made explanations to the meaning construction and use and choice of the passive voice based on the basic principles of Cognitive Grammar, and applied them in the English passive voice teaching in Senior High School. This thesis provides theoretical basis for the passive voice teaching,as well as a beneficial reference for English passive voice teaching. The research method of his thesis is combined by quantitative and qualitative study. The teaching experiment was held on two classes, one was control class, while the other experimental class. Each class was tested before and after the experiment to collect data of pretest and post-test scores, then the data was analyzed by SPSS 24.0.The analyses of the data from the tests show that the post-test scores of the experimental class are elevated prominently comparing with its pretest scores, while the control class not so prominent. The experiment result was corresponding with the expectation, which supported convincing evidence that introducing Cognitive Grammar in English passive voice teaching can significantly improve teaching effects and elevate students’ ability of understanding and using the passive voice. |
