| Reading is an effective way for junior school students to acquire information and plays an important role in English learning.However,the current English reading teaching effect in many junior high schools is far from satisfactory.And the textbook only as the reading material cannot satisfy the requirements of the new curriculum standard of English.Therefore,it is necessary to adopt a new reading teaching method and develop new teaching resources.English newspaper is considered an ideal teaching resource to supplement the textbook.Schema theory was put forward by Kant and plays an important role in the process of reading comprehension.It describes the reading process that readers combine their background knowledge with the information in the text to extract the meaning of the article.Many scholars and experts have done numerous researches on the application of schema theory in cultivating college students’ reading ability,while few of them focus on junior high school students.This thesis attempts to apply schema theory to English newspaper reading teaching in junior high school to find out whether schema-oriented newspaper reading teaching can change students’ attitude towards reading as well as improve students’ reading performance.The experiment adopts quantitative and qualitative research in two parallel classes of Grade 8 in Shenyang Hongqiao Middle School for three months.There are 50 students in the control class and 50 students in the experimental class.In the whole research,pre-test,post-test,questionnaires and interview are conducted.English newspaper reading teaching under the guidance of schema theory is applied in the experimental class,while self-learning of newspaper reading is employed in the control class.All the students in the two classes take part in the pre-test and post-test and the results are collected and analyzed by SPSS.Two questionnaires are carried out before and after the experiment in the experimental class to investigate the change of students’ attitude.And an interview is conducted in the six students who are randomly chosen from different level in the experimental class.The results of the experiment indicate that students’ learning interesting has been increased and their reading ability has been improved after the application of newspaper reading teaching based on the schema theory. |
