Reading is one of the important ways for language acquisition,and also an important means of language input in language teaching.Besides,the reading competence is one of the necessity to measure students’ comprehensive English language competence.However,English reading has always been the weak link in the process of students’ English learning.In addition,the English reading teaching should be improved.Lewis’ lexical chunks teaching theory and the language information processing theory take an active part in promoting the English reading teaching.Based on these,this paper attempts to discuss how to apply the lexical chunks teaching theory in teaching English reading in senior middle school to develop students’ English reading competence.Using literature analysis method,questionnaire method and experimental method,this paper treats 100 students of two classes in No.12 Middle School,in Yongan,Sanming City as the research object,and the experiment lasts for 16 weeks.This paper tries to verify the following two assumptions: First,applying the lexical chunks is helpful to improve the students’ English reading competence;second,applying the lexical chunks in the reading teaching is beneficial to the inspiring of students’ interest in learning English reading and improve their reading habits.Two tests and two questionnaires used to collect data,and SPSS19.0 software used for data statistics and comparative analysis.The results of the pretest shows that obvious differences did not exist between the Experimental Class and the Control Class in English reading competence.Results after the teaching experiment show that the Experimental Class student’s English level was significantly higher than before.Based on the statistical analysis of experimental data and survey data,this paper concludes that applying the lexical chunks in senior high school was helpful to improve the students’ English reading competence,and applying the lexical chunks was beneficial to the inspiring of students’ interest in English reading and improve their reading habits.Based on the result of the research,the author gives some teaching suggestions for English reading teaching in senior middle school,such as developing the awareness of chunks,making lexical chunks learning plan and expanding the resources of acquiring chunks.
