At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,the United States experienced the industrialization,urbanization and immigration boom,the great changes in society put forward new requirements for education,at the same time,popular scientific management thought,behavioral psychology,social control theory also affected a group of educational scholars,including the main representatives of Bobbitt,Charters,Snedden and so on.They promoted the social efficiency movement,and formed social efficiency ideology,which had a profound impact on the curriculum and teaching from then on.Afterwards,the social efficiency ideology further developed.Bobbitt added new interpretations to the term "social efficiency" in his later years,Dewey published his view of social efficiency,many scholars also presented some more objective and comprehensive understanding,which makes the social efficiency ideology more adaptable to the changing times.Ideally,social efficiency ideology assumes that the purpose of education is to meet the needs of society and to cultivate young people to better adapt to their role in society after adulthood,and to prepare for adult life.The content of education should focus on the knowledge and technology needed to serve the community.In practice,the concept of social efficiency ideology is to promote scientific curriculum,activity analysis and other related ways,making the curriculum and teaching more efficient.This study aims to analyze and explore the social background of the concept of social efficiency ideology,key educators,main points,the development situation and its impact on American education and society.It aims to show its true and diverse image.At the same time,by analyzing the educational thinking of the United States in the context of the rapid economic development,we can think about the form of the social efficiency education concept in China,its influence on education,and the future development trend.Although the times and social conditions are constantly changing,the view of social efficiency education is still worthy of our study.
