With the constant Curriculum Reform of Elementary Education,the choices of English teaching materials vary at the same time.Great changes of English teaching materials take place not only in colleges but also in middle schools.Meanwhile,the level of English that English starters get into depends greatly on the choices of English teaching materials in junior middle schools.Native English teaching materials are conducive to students' learning of native English.And Good English is just a set of native English teaching materials.To combine with Junior Middle School English Curriculum Standards of the Nine-year Compulsory Education,this study chooses Good English in junior middle school to analyze and it is aimed at providing a certain reference and enlightenment for choosing English teaching materials in junior middle schools.Good English is a set of reading materials brought in from Oxford University Press and it is used all over the world.In Britain,80 percent schools use it to teach students their mother language while there are 133 foreign countries who use it to teach their students a foreign language.In recent years,many middle schools in China begin to pay attention to Good English,and over a hundred schools have reached remarkable achievements by using it as an experimental teaching material.In Guilin,there are 3 middle schools that use Good English as a teaching material,and all of them have got some teaching experience.This thesis mainly studies the usage of Good English in the three junior middle schools in Guilin,including the following cases:teachers' and students' evaluations to the contents of Good English;teachers'and students' evaluations to the classes of Good English;the roles of Good English in improving teachers' teaching skills and professional qualities;the roles of Good English in students' English learning;the roles of Good English in students' tests and exams;and the degree of satisfaction of teachers and students to the teaching material.The results of the research show that Good English is a set of teaching materials which are very popular in the three middle schools.Teachers and students think that they are vivid and interesting with authentic languages and pronunciations;with Good English,the classes are lively and invigorating;the teaching materials help to improve teachers' teaching skills and professional qualities;they can help students in their abilities to listen,speak,read and write in English and to use English comprehensively;they also improve students' scores in tests and exams.Most teachers and students are satisfied with the materials while there are still some who think this set of teaching materials may be too difficult.To do this study,I distribute questionnaires and do some interviews to those who are using Good English and observe real English classes so as to analyze the practical use of it and the problems appeared in the process of teaching and learning.This paper mainly uses literature review method,questionnaire investigation method and interview method.I choose 3 middle schools that use Good English as one of their teaching materials in Guilin as the respondents,aiming at analyzing the problems existing in the process of using Good English.My purpose is to put forward reference,evaluations and suggestions for English teachers in junior middle schools and educational administrative departments,hoping that they can choose proper English teaching materials after the implement of New Curriculum Standard.I also hope to give effective suggestions and advice for the teaching of English teachers and the studying of students in middle schools,so as to promote the English study of junior middle school students.This study is composed of five chapters.Chapter 1 is the introduction.It introduces the background,the meaning and the purpose of the study,and discusses the studying methods and the overall structure of the paper.Chapter 2 introduces the definition,functions and categories of English teaching materials;it also introduces Good English,English Curriculum Standards and task-based teaching and it studies the relationship of the three at the same time.My views on analyzing teaching materials are also presented here.Chapter 3 introduces the researching program in detail.It includes the statements of researching problems,researching objects,researching methods,data collecting,analyzing and summarizing.Chapter 4 analyzes Good English,the teaching material in junior middle school and to survey and evaluates the use of it.This chapter contains two parts.The first part analyzes the teaching material Good English in junior middle school in detail while the second part includes the following things:to survey,analyze and evaluate the use of the teaching material.Chapter 5 deals with the problems found in using Good English,and provides some discussions and suggestions.Chapter 6 presents a summary.
