It is an indisputable fact that career identity and empathy of nurses will influence their service quality.Nursing students of secondary vocational school is an important source of nurses. What is the status quo of their career identity and empathy? Will these be affected by tense doctor-patient relationship nowadays? To improve the pertinence of nursing student cultivation, these issues are necessary for research, since educating students can only be achieved by understanding them.Unfortunately,Relevant reports have not been found up to now.As a teacher of Health School, the author of this paper, therefore, chose this topic, trying to explore the status quo of the students' career identity and empathy as well as the relations between the two aspects through empirical study.Meanwhile,it will be discussed here whether the current background of tense doctor-patient relationship(Medical practice contact as indicator)will affect their career identity and empathy. In this study, vocational nursing students in Yuxi Health School, where locates in Yunnan Province, are selected for research, including those studying at school at present, those who have been working in their internship and those front-line clinical nurses who have graduated.A total of 620 questionnaires were distributed,of which610 were recovered(recovery rate 98.4%).Eliminating 5 which were invalid, the effective ones are 605(effective rate 97.6).Using the empathy scale(interpersonal response index scale)and the career identity scale(for nursing students)as research tools,SPSS software made statistical analysis,t test, variance analysis, correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis.Besides,9 students(of three types)are selected for deep interview for further exploration of this study. Conclusions are as following:(1)The empathy of vocational nursing students is at a higher medium level(49.58± 9.15),in which Demographic Variable Analysis found no significant difference in the variables like gender and family economic status, whereas in a few other variables, including clinical practice situation(hospital level, time and status),the intention of selecting major, whether they would continue to choose to specialize in nursing, whether they are the only child of their family, whether their parents are engaged in the medical industry, and their place of household registration, one or more remarkable differences are identified.(2)The career identity of vocational nursing students is at a higher medium level(56.05±10.88),in which Demographic Variable Analysis found there is no significant difference in the variables like gender and family economic status, whereas in a few other variables, including clinical practice situation(hospital level, time and status),the intention of selecting major, whether they would continue to choose to specialize in nursing, whether they are the only child of their family, whether their parents are engaged in the medical industry, and their place of household registration, one or more remarkable differences are identified.(3)There is a positive correlation between the empathy and the career identity of vocational nursing students(R=0.324,p<0.01).Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that empathy has a significant positive predictive effect on career identity. This result reveals that the promotion of empathy level will help strengthen their career identity.Meanwhile, empathy is an important but not the only factor that influence career identity.(4)A comparative study of the three groups of experiment subjects found that the students at school have the highest level of empathy and career identity, followed by those clinical nurses who have graduated, and the group with lowest level is students in their internship. In a certain sense, this means that medical practice(the tension between doctors and patients)has an impact on the empathy and career identity of the vocational nursing students. However, this is not the single factor, other factors including the growth of age, social experience and clinical experience, personal characteristics and the education and training received also play an important role.Based on the results, this paper analyzes with relevant theories and research, and puts forward some suggestions on how to improve the career identity and empathy of vocational nursing students from three levels, namely, the students themselves, school and hospital.
