In recent years,the application of information technology in the field of education has made education dynamic,brought vitality and enriched the form of class teaching activities.Computer assisted instruction has been introduced in teaching in China and PowerPoint(PPT)has been popularly used in English class teaching.Therefore,it is significant to study PPT used in classroom teaching from the aspect of multimodality.Text,image,chart,sound,and video are combined together in multimodal PPT to create a vivid teaching environment,make class atmosphere active,attract students’ attention,and raise students’ interest in learning.Although class multi-modal PPT teaching boasts many strong points,it also has some problems.There are few domestic studies on PPT from the perspective of multimodality.Therefore,it is necessary to study PPT in classrooms of China.Based on the multimodal discourse analysis theory and input reinforcement theory,this paper analyzes and studies the PPT in senior high school English class from the angle of multimodality.This study investigates the present situation and problems of the collected PPT in English classes of senior high schools to provide practical suggestions and improve the efficiency of classroom teaching.This study adopts quantitative and qualitative approaches.First,it analyzes the types of modes in PPT used in English class of senior high schools from the aspect of multimodality and the problems and merits of PPT collected.Then the students’ attitude to multimodal PPT teaching and its influence on students are investigated by questionnaire survey.Lastly,the study investigates students’ and teachers’ views on multimodal PPT being collected and gets suggestions in improving class multimodal PPT design and application through interviews.SPSS 20.0 is used to analyze data from questionnaire survey with descriptive statistics presented.This study has drawn the following conclusions:(1)As for choice of modes,text mode is most frequently used while sound and video are the least.(2)Multimodal PPT teaching method is more popular than the traditional teaching method because it can attract the attention of students,make classroom atmosphere more active,and make the abstract contents more vivid.(3)In the interview,most teachers expect that schools should update teaching facilities timely to ensure successful class teaching,and provide teachers with PPT training opportunities to improve their skills in application and production of PPT.Students hope that the content relevant to the college entrance examination and audio and video mode can be added to PPT.All in all,PPT has many more advantages than its shortcomings.How to apply science and technology is the key to the effect of multimodal PPT.This study gives some implications to teaching.When teachers design PPT,they need consider such factors as teaching syllabus,teaching objectives,teaching content,the characteristics of students,and students’ needs.As for the choice of modes,the more does not necessarily mean the better.Teachers should choose the right mode according to the students’ needs to improve the efficiency of language teaching.
