As an international language,English has been paid much attention in the basic education stage of our country.And vocabulary is the fundamental branch in language learning,its importance is self-evident.Vocabulary is the driving force of speech output,playing an irreplaceable role in daily communication.Vocabulary knowledge will directly affect other sub-items of individual language skills,and lexical competence can predict comprehensive language ability to a great extent.As a result,vocabulary test become a critical part of English teaching.It is worth noting that the current English vocabulary testing systems show good qualities in the form and set of words,but there are still many problems.Firstly,most of them only focus on the breadth of vocabulary knowledge,ignoring the depth of vocabulary knowledge.Secondly,traditional paper and pencil test or computer-based testing can’t meet the demand for personalized testing.Therefore,it’s imperative to develop a personalized adaptive vocabulary testing system which is convenient for students to comprehensively know about their own vocabulary knowledge level.The paper mainly adopts the literature research method,mathematical model method,questionnaire survey method and statistical analysis method.The basic direction and ultimate goal of the system development are clearly defined based on the literature review.Aiming at the problems existing in the English vocabulary testing system and people’s appealing for personalized testing,a two-stage adaptive testing system,on the basis of item response theory,of high school English vocabulary knowledge is developed.Adhering to testing the depth of vocabulary knowledge on the premise of measuring the breadth of vocabulary knowledge,the system accurately assesses users’ vocabulary knowledge level,bringing them the brand-new testing experience.During the development phase,the system is developed using Dream Weaver,ASP and Access,in which the construction of two vocabulary knowledge item banks is the core part.In constructing the item bank of breadth knowledge,one-parameter logistic model is chosen to fit the items.Besides,the lexical difficulty of 3366 high school English words is assessed in terms of word frequency,word length as well as harmony of phonetic and orthographic features,whose frequency distribution fits normal distribution roughly.In constructing the item bank of depth knowledge,two-parameter logistic model is chosen to fit the items.Adopting anchor test design,this study collects students’ response data in pretest,and then estimates initial item parameters with the help of international popular parameter estimation software BILOGMG 3.0.Finally,the parameters of 289 items are obtained using mean and sigma method.After the completion of the system,a small-scale test is conducted to evaluate the reliability and validity of it.Results show that the reliability and validity are both at good level.In addition,the individual satisfaction with adaptive test system affects the promotion of adaptive test to a great extent.So,by means of two-way ANOVA method and paired sample T test method,the study analyzes the effect of computer self-efficacy,test anxiety and training on individual satisfaction with adaptive test system.Results show that individuals with high computer self-efficacy are easier to be satisfied with the adaptive testing system than individuals with low computer self-efficacy.Besides,test anxiety doesn’t influence adaptive test system satisfaction significantly.However,the interaction between test anxiety and computer self-efficacy influence it significantly.What’s more,the individual satisfaction with adaptive test system has improved significantly after training.Therefore,training should be paid more attention during the process of adaptive test promotion in the future.Design training content and form reasonably is necessary.And to improve the individual computer self-efficacy also can contribute to the popularity of the adaptive testing.
