| TOA(Tolerance of Ambiguity),a vital concept of cognitive style,refers to acceptable degree of ESL readers’ psychological inhibition due to ambitious comprehension of strange,unfamiliar,heterogeneous reading material,together with accompanied psychological inhibition in cognitive process.TOA may range from active acceptance to negative inhibition in cognition.Researchers on TOA originated from an American Psychologist named Browns Witkey.With on-going researches on TOA by linguistic psychologists,concerns for effects of TOA on language and that of English particularly have increased among researchers.Despite of reading as an essential component of English,senior-high English readers’ reading-comprehension abilities still remain lower than expected.Cognitive impairment holds much in English reading,which arouses worries among endless linguistic researchers & teachers.Aimed at the existent cognitive confusion in senior-high English reading,this study tends to explore latent factors with two questions raised: Whether relevance exists among reading scores,TOA levels and cognitive fatigue,what about the correlation coefficient? Therefore,this study will explore the latent relationship among reading scores,TOA level and cognitive fatigue.This research focuses on 60 participants from the same experimental class in Grade Two in Middle School.Due to class placement based on major categorization &evaluation of study achievements,subjects in the experimental class are similar in age,cognitive level,knowledge and skills..First,typical reading materials have been picked out from examinations.Secondly,on-lined Coh-Metrix Assessor’s been exploited to measure text readability by descriptiveness,word-concreteness,syntactic simplicity,referential cohesion,deep cohesion,together with textual length,proportion of compound complex sentences and ratio of new words.Thirdly,subjects complete three reading-comprehension tests and finish Subjective Judgment Scale of TOA as well as Subjective Judgment Scale of Cognitive Fatigue.Fourthly,all test papers and scales will be collected,with invalid ones neglected.Finally,all useful data will be put in a computational tool SPSS19.0 to compare means and standard deviations,toconduct K-S test,to make variance analysis accompanied by effect analysis once interactive effect of two factors on the dependent exists.LSD Multiple Comparison provides allowance for detained presentation of existent disparity in targeted data.According to this research,the Influence of reading scores upon cognitive fatigue is obvious(P=.020 <.050),so is that of TOA level upon cognitive fatigue(P=.030 <.050).If TOA level remains unchanged,the Influence of reading scores upon attention fatigue and memory fatigue remains the same(P=.030<.050),while that upon conception fatigue are more(P=.020 <.050)but thinking fatigue are most(P=.010 <.050). |
