Self-determination is the right and ability to control and manage one's own life. For disabled people, the ability to set goals, solve problems, and make decisions can make them more responsible and manage themselves better. Both in foreign countries and in Taiwan the study of self-determination has been increasingly researched. However,in mainland China the study of it started later and is less comprehensive in its results for different kinds of disabled adolescents. With the aim of analysing the current condition and influential factors of self-determination,this study has selected two hundred and sixty-six disabled teenagers from Chengdu,Chongqing,Guangzhou,Binzhou,Shijiazhuang, and Chengdu. At the same time, this study has interviewed physically handicapped teenagers, teachers, and parents to investigate the how self-determination can be encouraged amongst disabled teens and to analyse the influencing factors of self-determination in depth. The results of this research are as follows:1.Self-determination of disabled teenagers is generally at a moderate level, resulting in a lack of potential and limited opportunity.2.The gender and age of individuals have a significant effect on the overall level of self-determination in teenagers with physical disorders.Self-determination for boys was significantly higher than for girls.Generally, the self-determination of disabled teenagers increases with age.The environment has little effect on the self-determination of disabled teenagers.3.The educational attainment of the mother and parental attitudes to rearing a family have a significant effect on individual responses to self-determination in teenagers with physical disorders. The level of education of the mother is strikingly related to the level of self-determination in disabled teenagers. The level of self-determination in disabled teenagers with uneducated mothers is much lower than those with mothers of university education or above. The self-determination ability of disabled teenagers with mothers who have a middle school education is obviously higher than those whosemothers' education is primary.Parental attitudes to rearing children are also related to the level of self-determination in disabled teenagers. The self-determination ability of disabled teenagers in a democratic family is much higher than those in arbitrary or doting family. The self-determination ability of physical disabled teenagers in a permissive family is much higher than those in doting family. On the basis of this,in order to promote the self-determination ability of disabled teenagers, four suggestions have been made: 1 Develop self-determination courses.2Increase the expressive chances of self-determination.3 Change attitudes and encourage self-determination.4 Improve related knowledge of self-determination.
