Teacher immediacy refers to emotional cohesion between teachers and students through intimate contact.Teacher immediacy,which comes naturally from the sincerity of teachers,shows their love,concern and expectations.If English teachers can have a high-level immediacy,they will b e closer to their stud ents,and m eanwhile,easier to earn trust and respect of their stud ents.Teachers need to fo cus on cultivating immediacy so as to prom ote the smooth implementation of teaching and achie ve win-win results in p ersonal professional development and remarkable achievements in teaching.To investigate the current level of immediacy of junior high school English teachers and the relationship between teacher immediacy and student English learning outcomes,this study involves 460 students from eight classes and four English teachers in a junior high school in Shijiazhuang through three student questionnaires and an interview.The first questionnaire is to investigate the current leve l of imm ediacy of junior hi gh school English teacher.The second questionnaire is to survey the degree of student interest in learning English,which includes affective learning and cognitiv e learning.The third questionn aire is to s tudy class engagement of students during and after class.This research mainly studies th e following questions.What is the overall level of English teacher immediacy in junior high school? Does teacher immediacy affect student interest and class engagement in English class in junior high school? If it does,what are the specific effects? Which category of teacher immediacy affects student engagement more greatly ?Which dimension of student interest is m ore greatly affected by teacher immediacy ? Data was collect ed and then analyzed in SPSS.The author also gives a detailed description of the results in the fourth part.The findings are as follows.Firstly,the curre nt level of junior high school English teacher immediacy is relatively high.Secondly,there is a moderate association between junior high school English teacher imm ediacy(instructional immediacy,relational im mediacy,verbal immediacy,personal immediacy,nonverbal immediacy)and student interest and class engagement.Teachers engaged in immediate behaviors arouse students’ interest and encourage their engagem ent in the investig ation.Thirdly,it is the imm ediacy between teachers and students that is of great importance to student interest and class engagement.The cognitive learning of student interest is more likely to be affected by teacher immediacy.Finally,according to the findings,the author gives som e suggestions on how to enhance teacher immediacy.Teachers should try to improve their immediacy ability in order to create more effective classroom management,to encourage students to actively participate in class activities,to build a more harmonious classroom atmosphere and to achieve better academ ic performance.
