English Curriculum Standards(2011)point out that the main goal of English Curriculum in Basic Education is to stimulate students' interest in English learning,to pay attention to individual difference,to cultivate students' good learning habits and to develop the ability of autonomous learning and cooperation. Thus, how we stimulate students' interest in English learning and respect their individual difference to improve their English competency in rural primary school is of great significance. However,in rural primary schools, there are still many problems: the teaching ideas are obsolete, the hardware facilities are not adequate and teaching efficiency is low comparing to urban area. And all these problems bring about the consequence that many pupils have no interest in learning English and their different intelligences could not be developed properly. In view of the above problems, this study is conducted with the multiple intelligences theory as the guide, aiming to explore the teaching activities based on MI theory in rural primary school according to the different intelligent characteristics of the participants and whether teaching activities based on MI theory could improve the students' English learning interest or not.Concerning the limited conditions in rural primary school, the action research method is used throughout the experiment process. The research questions are as follows:1.How can the MI Theory be applied to classroom teaching in rural primary schools? 2.Can the teaching practice based on MI theory improve students' interest in English learning? The author takes a semester's teaching experiment. The participants of the study are 20 students of grade four from a rural primary school in Zhao Yuan county. In the process of the action research, the author uses the questionnaire, the interview and the teacher log to collect data. The process of experiment is separated into three stages: Firstly, the writer defines and analyzes problems with facts, and then determines the following research questions.Secondly, based on the foregoing situation, the researcher starts preliminary investigation to get basic information about students' English learning situation and their intelligent distribution.Combining the results of their MI distribution,a 16-week action plan about exploration of teaching activities based on MI theory is made,so as to improve pupils' interest in English learning.Thirdly, according to the plan, the writer carries out the teaching activities based on MI theory.During this process, teacher log and interview are used to get the effect of classroom activities. Finally, the results are collected through questionnaire.Compared to the results of questionnaire before experiment, the statistics show a totally different result.Through a semester's action research based on MI theory, results reveal that the pupils' interest in English has been greatly enhanced and their English achievements are improved as well.
