The humanistic perspective on curriculum was raised in the twentieth century.It is aimed at the insufficiency of traditional teaching view and has a positive effect on the development of students? quality and ability.Critical reading was put forward in the 1970 s,which is always related to critical thinking.The development of critical thinking is regarded to be important to improve students? reading ability.However,some English teachers in senior high school mostly focus on language knowledge and skills in reading teaching and numbers of students only passively accept and blindly suck up the information and standpoints in the book instead of analyzing,questioning and even criticizing,which leads to students? low reading ability.In order to investigate whether the critical reading teaching based on humanism can effectively improve the students? thinking ability,thus improving English reading ability,the study is carried out on the students of senior three in No.6 middle school through the following instruments: questionnaire,pre-test and post-test and interview.Through this study,the experiment tries to answer the following questions:1)What are the effects of critical reading teaching on the reading ability of middle school students?2)What is the difference between the experimental class and the controlled class before and after the experiment?3)How do students view the critical reading teaching based on humanism? Are the students satisfied with this new reading teaching model?In this thesis,there are five chapters.The author firstly describes the current situation of English reading teaching in China,and comes up with the necessity and significance about critical reading teaching based on humanism in Chapter One.After that the author introduces related viewpoints of humanism,and then talks about the related theories and research achievements on critical reading at home and abroad in Chapter Two.In Chapter Three,the author presents the research design,research questions,participants,instruments and procedures of applying critical reading teaching based on humanism.In Chapter Four the results and analyses of the data are presented.Chapter Five summarizes the main findings,implications and suggestions for further research.The results show that critical reading teaching based on humanism can not only enhance students? reading ability but also has important enlightenments and references to English teaching in China.
