Feedback in the classroom mainly refers to the teachers verbal and nonverbal evaluation of the performance of the students when they complete a learning task in the class, which is an important way to check the students’ learning result.English Curriculum Standards(2011)advocate the “student-centered” principle which takes the students as the important position in English learning.Theoretically speaking, they will have more chances to take part in the classroom activities and answer the teacher’s questions, however, they might inevitably come out with the wrong answers during the language output. It would be of great significance to improve students’ learning efficiency as well as to mobilize their enthusiasm for participation in English class if the students’ wrong answers are given the effective feedback.Feedback is one of the heated issues in the research fields of education that has been studied by many scholars and teachers at home and abroad, and they have made some fruitful studies. But studies on the feedback of the students’ wrong answers in junior high school English classrooms are comparatively limited and scarce. This paper focused on the feedback of the students’ wrong answers in English classrooms in junior high schools. The subjects of the study are 250 students and 38 teachers selected from the Experimental Middle School of Yantai Development Zone.By means of the classroom observation, questionnaires and interviews, the author attempted to discuss the following three questions: 1.What are the teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards the feedback of students’ wrong answers? 2.What kinds of wrong answers that students usually make in English classrooms are often given feedback? 3.When and how do students usually receive feedback when they give wrong answers?By analysis of the data, the main findings are as follows: Firstly, most of the students have positive attitudes towards the teachers’ feedback, and hopefully they can get feedback when they give wrong answers in English classes. For many students, the feedback they receive will benefit them from improving their learning abilities.Fromthe perspective of the English teachers, they also agree that the feedback given to the students could help them know about students’ learning outcome and avoid making the same wrong answers in their English learning.Secondly,in most cases, wrong answers such as pronunciation and intonation(60.54%),vocabulary usage(78.51%),grammar(88.17%),and pragmatic expressions(15.43%)in English class are often given feedback.Thirdly, the time when teachers give feedback at the following two points:one is the time when the students have done their expressions;the other is at the moment when teachers hear the wrong answers. And the ways of giving feedback are the direct correction of the students’ wrong answers and the repetition of the wrong answers.Based on the findings, the writer provides some suggestions to the English teachers. In hopes of improving the scientificity of their feedback and helping students inspire their learning enthusiasm and learning efficiency.
