In China,writing as one of the four basic skills of English learning,plays a vital role in cultivating students’ comprehensive language competence.Teacher requires that students not only should have the good mastery of English language,but also be equipped with abilities of imagination,expression,and evaluation,etc.According to the present English writing teaching situation in middle school,and the author’s internship experience in Taicang Experimental Middle School,we can see that students’ writing ability is far from satisfaction of the basic requirements of the new English Curriculum Standard for Writing in compulsory education.In order to improve this situation,with the promote of new curriculum reform,the author chooses the portfolio-assessment,a new assessment method,to replace the traditional assessment method called summative method that only pays more attention to students’ learning outcome.On the one hand,with the help of the portfolio-assessment,the students themselves can reflect their problems in writing process,which will help students monitor and control their learning aims and learning strategies,strengthen their self-confidence to learn English.On the other hand,the writing portfolio can help the teacher find out students’ problems in the writing process,which is of great significance for the efficiency in middle school teachers’ future English writing teaching.The author tries to apply the portfolio assessment into English writing teaching in middle school,in order to verify the following three predictions: first,portfolio assessment is able to stimulate middle school students’ interest in writing;second,portfolio assessment is able to improve middle school students’ self-reflection ability and their actual writing efficiency;third,portfolio assessment is able to improve the efficiency of middle school teachers’ future writing teaching.The teaching experiment is conducted in two parallel classes of the Taicang Experimental Middle School.And it lasts three months.Portfolio assessment is applied to evaluate the students’ English writing in the experimental class,while the control class still uses the traditional summative assessment.Both classes were required to take a questionnaire and a test before and after the experiment.After the experiment,the author interviewed some students in the experimental class.At the same time,the author has a self-reflection of her three months’ English writing teaching.According to the experimental results,the author draws the conclusion that portfolio assessment can do better in inspiring students’ writing interests,,enhancing their writing confidence and better improving their ability of self-reflection in writing process and improving the students’ writing ability more efficiently than traditional summative assessment.Meanwhile,portfolio assessment is a kind of siginificant way to improve midddle school teachers’ efficiency in their English writing teaching.
