The 21 st century is the information age.Due to the unceasing acceleration of the renewal speed of knowledge,the cultivation of critical thinking skills(mainly including six skills,interpretation,analysis,evaluation,inference,explanation and self-regulation)has become one goal of national education reform.The high school stage is an important period to cultivate the students' critical thinking.However,in fact,most students are still lack of critical thinking skills.Confronted with this situation,this thesis mainly explores the factors which influence high school students' critical thinking skills in English writing,which may provide the basis for the cultivation of critical thinking skills.The author firstly takes the writing parts of the National Matriculation English Test of Anhui Province for the past nearly ten years as the entry point and makes analysis into the students' critical thinking skills;then by virtue of the activity of Famous Teachers' Studio in Huaibei City,Anhui Province,the author surveys and analyzes some English teachers' cultivation on the students' critical thinking skills in the form of questionnaires;the author also learns about the actual situation that teachers cultivate the students' critical thinking skills through classroom observation;finally,the author makes interview on some high school students so as to serve as the supplementary and illustration of the factors that influence the high school students' critical thinking skills.The results of questionnaires show that high school English teachers cultivate the students' some critical thinking skills imperceptibly in daily teaching,but they do not involve in much about evaluation and deduction.In practical English teaching class,teachers do not pay sufficient attention to the cultivation of analysis,deduction and evaluation skills.Through face-to-face talk with the students,the author finds that the students' writing thought is often restricted by college entrance examination this “baton” in their daily English writing class and they feel it is quite hard for them to express their true views or ideas.As a result,this situation influences the cultivation of analysis,deduction and evaluation to some degree.Based on the analysis of the above influencing factors,this paper further puts forward two suggestions: firstly,push for the reform of English writing of college entrance examination,optimize the evaluation method of writing and set appropriate evaluation criterion for writing;secondly,in English writing class,the teachers should cultivate the students' critical thinking skills from three links,before the writing,in the course of writing as well as after the writing,so that the students can gain in every writing practice and their skills of critical thinking can be improved.
