The thesis takes American senior high school history textbooks "World History: Patterns of Interaction" published by McDougal Littel Press as a case,according to American High School History Course Standard,analyzes the charts used in American history textbooks.The thesis summarizes the relevant types of historical charts,investigates characteristics of those charts used in the textbooks,deepens the understanding of using charts in history textbooks,provides some positive reference to the further usage of history textbooks in the future.Chapter one investigates the characteristics of the charts in American history textbooks by classifying the images and charts presented in the textbooks,analyzing ranges,categories,time spans and also relevant content of charts.Charts presented in the textbooks differ in categories with a wide range,a large time span and abundant content.Chapter two analyzes features of using charts in "World history:Patterns of Interaction" published by McDougal Littel Press from several aspects: textbook content system and attached content,the layout of the charts in the textbooks and the usage of the charts.Chapter two analyzes features of using charts in "World history:Patterns of Interaction" published by McDougal Littel Press from several aspects: textbook content system and attached content,the layout of the charts in the textbooks and the usage of the charts.Chapter three one step further illustrates the shortcomings in using charts in the textbooks by analyzing the situation where Chinese history curriculum standards lacking the cultivation the ability in reading the charts and also lacking the use of charts in textbooks.This chapter combines the regulations of history curriculum standards from the American State Georgia,then summarizes the implications that McDougal Littel's World History: Patterns of Interaction has given to China.
