English writing is an important way for English learners to express themselves as well as an important representation of learners' English comprehensive competence.However,as shown in previous researches,the performance of students in senior high school is far from satisfactory.It is hard for students to write a composition with correct grammar,clear views and coherent structure.The National English Curriculum Standard of Senior High School(2013)puts forward new requirements to English writing teaching in senior high school,which pays special attention to improving students' ability to express themselves in English,to cultivating students' ability to write a coherent and structured essay,and describe things or express their views and attitudes.Therefore,how to improve students' English writing proficiency becomes an urgent problem that needs to be solved.This research applies Memetics into English writing teaching in senior high school,which aims at exploring the function of memes to improve students' English writing proficiency.Meme is a cultural transmission unit,or a cultural replication factor.Memetics was put forward by Richard Dawkins in 1976,which was used to explain evolution regulation of culture.Language itself is both the meme and the main carrier of spreading memes.When vocabulary,sentence patterns,paragraphs,coherence and structure of compositions are copied and transmitted through imitation,they become language memes.There are four stages of successful language memes:assimilation,retention,expression and transmission,which can be used to guide English writing teaching in senior high school.This study intends to explore three research questions:1)What is the role of the teacher in English writing teaching model based on Memetics?2)In what ways does English writing teaching model based on Memetics affect students' English writing habits?3)What changes have taken place in the senior high school students' English writing ability by using English writing teaching model based on Memetics?The research subjects are two classes of Grade one in one senior high school.The teaching experiment lasted for one semester,during which the experimental class adopted the English writing teaching model based on Memetics,while the control class used traditional teaching model.In the research process,following research methods are adopted:literature review,teaching experiment,questionnaire and interview.According to the data analysis,it draws a conclusion that in English writing teaching model based on Memetics,teachers play the role of transmitters and carriers of memes.This model can help students form a good habit in English writing,and it can improve students' English writing scores.Therefore,it proves that English writing model based on Memetics is feasible.In English writing teaching model based on Memetics,the learners construct their own meme pool(including vocabulary,sentence patterns,paragraphs,coherence and structure of compositions)under the teacher's guidance,which can help them form the habit of thinking in English,and improve their English writing ability better.However,there still exist some inevitable limitations,and objectivity of the experiment and controllability of the variables are not thoughtful enough.Therefore,improvement and reflection on English writing teaching model based on Memetics should be further explored in the future.
