Vygotsky has a very important impact on Western psychology.Since 1960s his works have been gradually translated into English.Vygotsky's theory has gained a lot of attention. The cultural-historical theory emphasizes the important role of social culture in the development of children's thinking, providing a new perspective for western scholars, enlightening the birth of new Activity theory, social constructivism and other new theories.Vygotsky studies in western countries have gone through more than 50 years of development and have achieved fruitful results. The method adopted in this paper is the documentary method and the comparative method. The author has collected and sorted out the research on Vygotsky theory, including papers, monographs and anthologies and other relevant information. In this paper, the development of Vygotsky studies in the west is divided into four stages:starting period, prosperous period, criticized period and the revisionist movement, and the development and achievement of each stage are introduced.By sorting out the development process, the author analyzes the reason why Vygotsky has been the long-term concern of Western academia, and why there is a new turn of Vygotsky studies in the new century, and explores the implication for domestic research and education reform.
