The importance of correction and feedback in English writing teaching can’t be underestimated in terms of students’ writing ability,interest,even the quality of English teaching.With the rapid development of education technology and the fast exploration of educational software and platform,computers are widely used in English writing teaching,such as the application of automated essay scoring system.At present,researches of feedback on English writing from automated essay scoring system have achieved certain results,however,most of these studies focused on college English while few of them attached importance to middle school English,let alone suggestions for problems.Therefore,it is quite necessary to conduct a more in-depth analysis and detailed research about the current situation of computer feedback for English writing teaching in middle school,and then figure out its influence on student’s English writing as well as its shortcomings,so that make some improvement of the system and provide countermeasures and suggestions for middle schools’ English writing teaching.The study is mainly based on Pigai.org,the AES system which is used in six middle schools in Sichuan province,as an example to discuss the current situation of the AES system,its limitation as well as possible solutions in terms of answering three questions:(1)What is the current situation of AES system’s application in English writing?(2)Whether the application of AES system—Pigai.org has some problems in Senior High School’s English writing?(3)What’s the teachers’ attitude toward the system and whether they have any suggestions?Working as a member of the project investment--The Empirical Research on Language Intelligent Education System and Discovery Research on Cultural Value,which is one of the sub topics of the research--The Exploration on Big Language Data and Discovery of its Cultural Value(Grant No: 14@ZH036),a major project of National Social Science Fund,the author analyzes the system’s current situation of application according to the usage feedback from universities and data report from the six schools(Chengdu NO.7 High School,Chengdu Shishi High School,Sichuan Jianyang Middle School,Chengdu Foreign Languages School,Chengdu Experimental Foreign Languages School and Meishan Foreign Languages School)in Sichuan province,and all the feedback and report are collected and sorted by Beijing Word Network Technology Co.,Ltd.The author also has a comparative analysis about students’ compositions from contents,structure,coherence,grammar,and sentence pattern,lexical and basic rules,which based on 25 writing samples of 25 students from Class 12,Grade 2 in Chengdu Shishi High School,and then the author turns to investigate teachers’ attitude and suggestions toward the AES system through questionnaires.The results show that “Pigai.org” is extremely popular no matter in the universities or middle schools.Not only can the system accurately point out students’ language errors in detail,improve students’ ability of autonomous learning,especially the self-correcting ability,and enhance their interest in English writing;on the other hand,bit it also can reduce the burden of teachers’ correcting composition,make teachers get freedom from past mechanical tedious repetitive corrections.The research still presents the results that the system also has many shortcomings.Although the feedback from the system can improve students’ language knowledge such as vocabulary and grammar in a certain degree,it almost has little effect on the ideological content,discourse structure,innovative and logic of students’ composition.In other words,the teacher feedback cannot completely be replaced by the system feedback,and teachers’ role cannot be ignored too.Only with the joint efforts of students,teachers,schools and information technology personnel,can the role of artificial intelligence in English teaching be given a full play,and then promote the development of English teaching.
