Higher education in British North America originated in such a specific environment,on the one hand by the European immigrants,especially the British immigrants brought the profound influence of western traditional culture, on the other hand is subject to the new colonies in North America in the political, economic,religious, and cultural influences, the two facts interact with each other, resulting in a unique higher education in the colonial period.The development of British North America higher education could dividede in two periods, there were three colleges established before the 18 th century 40 years,to train pastors and religion during the period of school development process to occupy the dominant position; from the1940 s to the revolution of American independence on the eve of the emerged 6 new colleges,although retained some basic religious ideas, but has begun to cater to the society on education secular demand, the purpose of education and the content of teaching pay more attention to practical. Although the higher education in British North American has been transplanted to the model of British higher education from the date of birth,however,the colonist soon realized,the backward economic and cultural level with the no-balance of population distributing,will lead to the result that it is impossible to copy the traditional model of European University in the North American.So the courage to explore, pay attention to the actual European immigrants in the traditional mode of European University, and not by the traditional mode of restraint.But according to the actual conditions of the colony, the higher education in this period of time shows a distinct characteristic, which is the creation of the college,the organization form, the management system, the purpose of education and training objectives, curriculum setting,raising funds and the source of students, etc..The development of higher education also makes the cultural exchanges between the colonies more and more frequently, and promotes the formation of American national consciousness.At the same time, the influence of the social environment, the British North American higher education in the development of some of the drawbacks and shortcomings, we should not neglect.
