| Outdoor exercise has gained popularity among people with its qualities of interest, adventure and entertainment since the 80 s of last century. With the fast economic development of our country, the level of people's life has been improved gradually and people's lifestyle has changed a lot. Therefore, standard for doing physical exercise, enhancing quality of life and the way of entertaining has also advanced very much. Outdoor exercise has spread from the minority to the masses so that more and more people come into contact with it, among which university teachers is a special group joining in outdoor exercise. By investigating and understanding the situation of university teachers' participation in outdoor exercise in Henan province, this paper summarizes the current situation and characteristics of it and finds out the factors affecting participation in outdoor exercise. It also analyses, induces and concludes the existing problems and puts forward countermeasures. This paper provides scientific grounds for good development of outdoor sport in university teachers and hopes to provide correspondent theory and atmosphere for its reasonable development.The results of the study are listed as follows:1. The situation of university teachers' participation in outdoor exercise in Henan province has a high correlation with the age and gender of participators.2. University teachers commonly have keen interest in outdoor exercise, but most of them are lack of knowledge of it. They mainly get information of outdoor exercise from television.3. The aims of university teachers' participation in outdoor exercise in Henan province are better fitness, interest, recreation and communication, etc. The aims are becoming diversified.4. University teachers take part in outdoor exercise mainly by friends' or colleagues' organization, family participation and group participation through networking platform. The participation approaches are unitary, organizers' ability is limited and organizations are lack of related qualification.5. University teachers often choose conventional outdoor projects, such as outing, road trips and climbing. They usually participate on holidays and in peri-urban areas. And they do not join in it frequently.6. Most of participators spend 1001? to 5000? in outdoor exercise. Spending items are concentrated primarily on transportation and food. And a few of them are clothes and equipment.7. University teachers who participate in outdoor exercise in Henan province seldom purchase insurance. Also, people seldom take part in professional learning for outdoor exercise. Thus, participators' knowledge of outdoor exercise and awareness of security need to be enhanced. Slight cuts and bruises are the main injuries of participators. Most of them attach importance to environmental protection.8. University teachers who participate in outdoor exercise in Henan province need urgently spare time, professional guidance, support of universities, seasoned organizers or qualified organizations. The restraining factors of university teachers in Henan province taking part in outdoor sport are economy, security, course load and professional guidance.Suggestions are put forward as follows:1. Develop projects of varying intensity and difficulty according to the basic characteristics of university teachers in Henan province. Increase coverage of the projects to make it easy for more people to participate in outdoor exercise.2. Disseminate and popularize outdoor exercise by various resources at university. Create atmosphere of outdoor sport and cultivate potential enthusiasts to let more people know about it.3. The diversified aims of university teachers in Henan province taking part in outdoor sport reflect that outdoor exercise had high adaptability. Universities and relevant social organizations should lead to right idea of outdoor exercise and promote scientific and reasonable participation in outdoor sport.4. University teachers are lack of approaches of taking part in outdoor exercise. The existing approaches are single and risky. Universities can establish outdoor club or other professional organizations and reinforce their contact with social organizations. They should open channels between university teachers and outdoor sport and provide them a secure, reliable and credible platform.5. According to the time and projects chosen by university teachers for their outdoor exercise, university teachers have little spare time and take part in fixed projects. It is recommended to strengthen establishment of outdoor camps and infrastructure in peri-urban areas. Universities can also build conventional expansion facilities and rock climbing facilities to meet teachers' demand.6. Guide reasonably university teachers' consume concept and purchase proper equipment. It can improve the feeling of experiencing outdoor exercise and reduce risks to the lowest level.7. University teachers should intensify their awareness of buying professional outdoor insurance to shift risks at most. Outdoor exercise is never a small thing. Joining in training of outdoor professional skills and safety education can reduce risks in a way. Although university teachers seldom get injuries in outdoor exercise, it is a must to enhance security awareness. Therefore, there must be a comprehensive plan and readiness. Design different plans for different emergency.8. Universities should pay more attention to university teachers' physical and mental development. They can improve teachers' welfare, organize outdoor exercise for them regularly and provide professional guidance for them at the same time.
