High School Input And Provincial Gap In Entrance Opportunity Of High-Quality University

As one of the most valuable resources, entrance opportunity of high-quality university is desired and pursued by millions of students, and thus the equality of the opportunity is concerned and studied by more and more scholars. Facing the unbalanced provincial acceptance rate in China, this paper studied the geographical distribution of entrance opportunity of high-quality university and its relationship with high school educational input. Based on the provincial acceptance rate of 33 "985 project" universities from 2005 to 2013, this paper estimated the multifactor model and the convergence model by three kinds of estimation methods including the system generalized moment estimation method to study the following two questions. How's the static and dynamic situation of geographical distribution of the entrance opportunity of high-quality university? What's the relationship between the opportunities with high school educational input? As for the first question, this paper found that the overall provincial gap is still very prominent, but the provincial gap of some of "985 project "universities is decreasing, and the convergence analysis shows that the provincial "985" acceptance rate follows the (3 convergence pattern, which means that provinces with lower entrance opportunity tends to grow faster in terms of the entrance opportunity, thus the provincial opportunity will converge to a same level in the long run. As for the second question, this article found that increasing the investment in high school education can not only improve the level of provincial entrance opportunity of high-quality university, but also speed up the growth rate of the opportunity level. Thus, we suggest that we should optimize the allocation of educational resources during the stages of higher education as well as the basic education. Also, promoting the coordinated development of regional economy is the fundamental measure to balance the geographical distribution of entrance opportunity of high-quality university.
