A Study Of English Vocabulary Learning Strategies For The 5^th And 6^th Graders In Primary Schools

The period of the 5_th and 6_th graders is the key stage of learning English.For the 5_th and6 th graders,it is definitely important to learn the English vocabulary to improve their English.According to New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary Schools and Junior/Senior Middle Schools,the students in primary schools must grasp some English strategies.With the previous research and the vocabulary learning characteristics of the 5_th and 6_th graders,this study is based on New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary Schools and Junior/Senior Middle Schools,and it is order to design the questionnaire “The questionnaire of the English vocabulary learning strategies for the 5_th and 6_th graders” which is developed by myself.By the 711 investigations,it showed the usage and its influential factors of the 5_th and 6_th graders' English vocabulary learning strategies.The results showed that:1.The reliability and validity of “The questionnaire of the English vocabulary learning strategies for the 5_th and 6_th graders” are very high.2.The level of the 5_th and 6_th graders' English vocabulary learning strategies is just intermediate or even lower.And the four English vocabulary learning strategies from high to low are the cognitive strategies,the control strategies,the resource strategies and the communicative strategies.3.The influence factors of the 5_th and 6_th graders' English vocabulary learning strategies are the demographical variable and the learner factors.They are the sexes,the site of the schools,the study engagement,the learning approaches,the learning motivation and the learning interest.According to the results of the study,this paper first offers the English vocabulary learning strategies which are suitable for the 5_th and 6_th graders,and some suggestions in teaching for the English teachers in primary schools.The English teachers can train the English vocabulary learning strategies in the teaching procedure in view of the demographical variable and the learners factors,which is to improve the level of the students' English vocabulary learning and is up to the standard,New English Curriculum for Chinese PrimarySchools and Junior/Senior Middle Schools,and to improve students' English vocabulary learning ability.
