Vocabulary is the basis unit of a phrase. Meanwhile, it is also the the essence of the L2 acquisition. And the success of L2 learning deeply depends on L2 vocabulary acquisition. However, the vocabulary knowledge of L2 is usually considered as being acquired through two ways which are incidental vocabulary learning and intentional learning. What's more, more attention are payed by more and more researchers increasingly to implementing the researches on L2 vocabulary acquisition. As the deep research, a large number of researchers and scholars focus their attention on the effects of different glosses types on the incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading. However, the research subjects involved these studies are usually high level language proficiency students and glosses types usually are L2. Besides, the researches on high school students and Chinese glosses are not so much. On the basis of the Comprehensible Input Hypothesis, the Depth of Processing Theory and the Involvement Load Hypothesis, this thesis aims at exploring the effects of three different glosses types on the incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading for the senior one students(multiple-choice Chinese glosses, single Chinese glosses and null glosses). This thesis is undertaken to answer three research questions:(1) In the Immediate Test, which glosses type exerts an positive effect on the incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading for the senior one students(single Chinese glosses, multiple-choice Chinese glosses and null glosses)?( 2)Which kind of glosses is better to retain the memory of the incidental vocabulary in the Delayed Test after reading?(3) How can students' vocabulary size affect the acquisition of the incidental vocabulary in reading? The research subjects, which are three parallel classes, are from the same senior high school in Pu Yang of He Nan province. The duration of this study is three weeks. The Immediate Test and the Delayed Test are conducted in three parallel classes with three glosses types. The results of this empirical study are analyzed by SPSS 17.0.On the basis of this study, in the Immediate Test multiple-choice Chinese glosses are more positive than single Chinese glosses and null glosses.Besides, single Chinese glosses are much better than null glosses. Meanwhile,as for the retention of acquired vocabulary, P=.00<.05 shows that there is significant difference among multiple-choice Chinese glosses, single Chinese glosses and null glosses. At last, statistics can show that the vocabulary size level can exert an influence on the effects of the incidental vocabulary acquisition. And the higher the vocabulary size is, the better the effects of the incidental vocabulary acquisition become. On one hand, this thesis confirms the feasibility of the IVA theory. Onthe other hand, this thesis is significant for English learners to choose reading materials and enlarge vocabulary size. What's more, this thesis plays an significant role in choosing teaching materials and compiling the content of textbooks for English teachers and compilers.
