First-tier teachers know that the conic sections combining geometry and algebra is one of the main contents in Senior mathmatics, which is significant for developing students' space thinking ability,logical ability as well as abstract thinking ability. In the meanwhile, because of its type diversity and difficulty, the students find it hard to master the knowledge, causing the problem that a large number of students seem to master the knowledge in class, but they can't use it flexibly after class. In order to solve the problem, we carried out a research on the teaching of Conic Variant. According to analyzing the questionair of "the problems about learning in Conic Variant", we find that the main reason for it lies mainly in the fact the students pay only attention to the memory and application of the results, ignoring learning about the forming and developing of the knowledge, therefore they can't set up the whole system of the knowledge. In addition, another reason for the students' not mastering flexibly is that they lack enough practice because of the pressure from the National College Examination. The Variant teaching in mathmatics is considered as an effective teaching method to help the students master a concept and to solve a problem differently. It also can make the students involved in its forming process, and solve the problem above. Therefore, applying the variant teaching to the conic sections properly should be an effective way for the students to overcome difficulty in studying.The variant teaching based on previous research is defined renewedly in this article, discussing the principles and theoretical basis for the variant teaching, and illustrating the style and implementation strategy of it; furthermore, the case which is based on the practice is given and analyzed, explaining clearly about how to apply this method to the conic sections teaching.The research has shown that applying the variant teaching in the conic sections teaching properly can definitely solve many existing problems mentioned above. If the students master the method, not only can they overcome the difficulty in learning, but also they can cultivate their thinking quality, improve their flexibility of thinking as well as their innovation capability.
