The British woman writer Doris Lessing who won the Nobel Prize for Literature,is a prolific writer and her works are widely loved and praised by the Chinese and foreign literary circles. Her novel The Summer Before the Dark has received extensive attention from the western reviews since its publication. However, there are relatively fewer domestic comments on this work and the research from the angle of eco-feminism is much less.On the basis of the former study, this thesis attempts to employ the theory of eco-feminism to thoroughly analyze The Summer Before the Dark, mainly includes the interpretation on sexes, patriarchy, women and nature as well as man and nature. This paper firstly analyzes the close relationship between nature and females by the angle of the frequent interaction and close connection between women and the images of nature, such as water, plants and animals.Besides, the ecofeminist thoughts contained in the novel are discussed via the views of the patriarchal restriction to the social development, female's struggle for discourse power and their resistance to the patriarchal society, the various natural disasters caused by the destruction to nature and nature's punishment on mankind. At last, from the perspective of the personal inner harmony, the harmony between women and men and the harmony between man and nature, the paper illustrates the realistic meaning of the novel and the enlightenment to build a harmonious society. This paper adopts eco-feminism to interpret The Summer Before the Dark, pointing out men's oppression on women and nature as well as reflecting on the relationship between men, women and nature, which makes it have realistic significance.Human beings should recognize the importance of building a society where man live with nature harmoniously.Only in this way can mankind survive healthily and develop in a sustainable way.
