Against the current background of information globalization,English and Chinese language contact is more convenient and frequent than ever, and affects a wider group of people.Based on the theory of language monitoring,by means of cumulative vocabulary coverage, this dissertation makes an investigation into the People's Daily from 2013 to 2016 in which the actual use of loanwords originated from English in the 6~thh edition of Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(CCD)are examined;to be specific, the current hot fields of English-Chinese language contact are identified, the desuetude of loanwords originated from English is explored, the developing trends of some words are predicted, and the differences between the use of Chinese characters of English source and lettered words of English source are compared in order to clarify the influences of English loanwords on modern Chinese for the mass people,as well as making some effective supplements for the national language monitoring project. The author adopts an empirical research method and use the authoritative official media of the People's Daily as the analysis object, which is rather powerful in persuasion. This topic not only studies translation issues on the data, but also takes into account the micro and macro(language policy and language planning)problems of language research. Therefore, the research findings have certain practical referential significance. The research shows that with the continuous deepening of language contact between English and Chinese, loanwords originated from English have flooded into modern Chinese on a large scale, exerting far-reaching influence on Chinese through infiltrating all aspects of Chinese social lives.Firstly,an English loanword included in the sixth edition of CCD will appear approximately in every 500 words in the2013-2016 People's Daily.Loanwords originated from English have become an inseparable part of modern Chinese vocabulary.Secondly, there are huge differences in the use of loanwords originated from English in the sixth edition of CCD.About17.9%to 21.4%of the 548 loanwords originated from English have reached the common word grades in the People's Daily corpus from 2013 to 2016,and the infrequent words account for approximately 78.6%to 82.1%.The number of commonly used words decreased annually but their frequencies increased overall. The number of infrequent words increased annually but their frequencies decreased overall.Thirdly, the fields of science and technology, economy, and people's livelihood have become the hot fields of English and Chinese language exchanges. The frequency of“???”ranked first in the foreign words examined in the three consecutive years in2014-2016.At the same time, some lettered words of English source are quite commonly used in modern Chinese, such as“APEC”,“PM2.5”,and“NBA”.Fourthly,there are 118 words that have not been used for the four consecutive years from 2013to 2016,accounting for 21.53%of the loanwords included. Therefore, the necessity of inclusion these words like“?????(ultimatum),?????(X-ray),???(angel),??(laser),???(number one),???(palace),??(pass)”,etc in CCD remains to be further discussed.Their disappearance in the corpus mainly owns to four factors:the concepts or things represented by words are no longer used in everyday lives;free-translated words replace transliterated words;free-translated words replace lettered words;and domain restrictions.Fifthly, from 2013 to 2016 the frequencies of 9 loanwords originated from English saw an annual rise in use,and 33words decreased annually.Of the 190 lettered words from English, only the use of“EMS”had continued to rise for the four years. The most commonly used lettered word“GDP”showed an overall sharp decline in the four years.Sixthly,Chinese has a strong absorptive ability as English-sourced Chinese characters in modern Chinese are obviously superior in use to that of the Chinese lettered words of English source. The frequencies of high frequent lettered words from English are generally higher than those of their corresponding Chinese forms. The use of lettered words will not trigger the so called“Chinese crisis”.Lastly, synonymous loanwords originated from English evolve in the following trends:the script forms are simplified, the free translated words replace the transliterated words, the special names replace the free translation words, and the lettered words of English source compete with their synonymous Chinese characters.
