Drama translation is one important branch of literary translation. However, the study of drama translation is kind of limited in number and depth.Compared with people's attention to and exploration in drama theory, dramatic genre and practice in dramatic art, drama translation is often marginalized, especially the avant-garde drama. The text for the translation project is adopted from the last twelve acts of the drama Rhinoceros in Love.It is a great challenge for the author to reproduce in English the lines of the drama that reflect the ethnic customs of the people in the source text as well as the lyrics texts and dialogues with poetic rhymes. The author will combine the three features of the drama--representation of speakability, representation of characterization and representation of acceptability--to expound how the translation can make full use of the theory of “horizons of expectation,” and help perfect the translation of the dialogue in the drama. The central part of this paper is centered on how to translate the dialogue of the drama by referring to these three different features of the drama.Firstly, from the view of speakability, the author uses such translation strategies as literal translation and omission to deal with the characters' dialogues,to re-present colloquialism more directly and realize the dramatic conflict. Then, when dealing with the sentences with poetic features, the author uses literal translation to reproduce the effect achieved by antithesis, retaining its beauty in rhyme and form.Secondly,as to characterization, the author mainly uses repetition and negation to show the personality of the characteristics. In addition, from the perspective of acceptability, there are some examples that involve the ethnic idioms, cultural background and local customs prevalent in the drama.Considering the audience's need for variety, the author uses free translation and flexible translation to provide the audience with new understandings of the drama by means of different texts, different images and different meanings,so as to help the audience form new horizons about the drama.
