In this research we try to have a macroscopic understanding of “the author's image” in Chekhov's works from the perspective of the language structure.“The author's image” is a central concept in the literary rhetoric which was constructed by the Eminent scholar of Soviet union V.V.Vinogradov.Philology and literature combine together by constructing the edge discipline-literature rhetoric. At the same time, the theory of “the author's image”introduces an objective, comprehensive and effective research method of literature text for literature lovers. The author has summarized the author's image in the whole process of literary activity.Namely, creation, literature and appreciation of the writer's unique feeling and attitude towards life. The author's feeling and attitude is not an abstract concept that exists separately in the text, but it is actually permeated into the language of the works, which means that it is an objective and materialized subjective evaluation. In the novels, the narrative language is often a combination of multilingual layers, and the author sketches out a complete picture of “the author's image”from various aspects. Therefore,in this thesis, the author tries to analyze the structure of the language in Chekhov's works, thus drawing an overview of the author's image. This paper consists of three parts:introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction partly explains the background of the subject, the meaning of the study and the present state of the study. The text consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, the author makes a comprehensive discussion on the structure of the language, mainly elaborating the classification of the language layer and the interrelation between the various language layers; The second chapter analyzes the author's image in detail and interprets the dialectical relationship between the structure of the language and the author's image; The third and fourth chapters aremainly about the process of combining the theory with practice, which is supported by the numerous examples in Chekhov novels, and deeply analyzes the author's image in Chekhov's works. The conclusion is mainly a summary of the previous sections.Chekhov is one of the masters of short stories in the world. There are many researches on Chekhov at home and abroad, but few people analyze the author's image from the perspective of the language structure. Therefore, the author hopes that everyone has a more in-depth understanding of Chekhov's work through a new angle.
