Compensation For Cultural Default In C-E Translation Of Brief Introduction To Qiyang County

As the publicity material of the government portal website of Qiyang county,Brief Introduction to Qiyang can be divided into six parts including Geographical Environment,Natural Resources,Science and Education,Scenic Resources,Qiyang culture and Qiyang Speciality which introduces the local customs and cultural characteristics in detail and fully shows the comprehensive strength of Qiyang to the outside world.Besides,it plays an important role in attracting foreign business and investment and the promotion of Qiyang culture.The thesis chooses Brief Introduction to Qiyang County as its source material of which the most remarkable textual feature is the cultural default frequently appearing in the text.Cultural default refers to the omission of the common cultural background knowledge of both sides of the communication during the cross-cultural communication process.Cultural default is a common phenomenon exists in Chinese.However,it has become an obstacle in the translation process because of the difference between the source language culture and target language culture.Therefore,the translator has to adopt appropriate compensation strategies and methods in order to make up for the semantic loss caused in the process of transferring the linguistic form.On the basis of cultural default and translation compensation,this thesis has elaborated the definition,causes,features of cultural default and the necessity of translation compensation and has put forward explicit compensation strategy,implicit compensation strategy and the combination of explicit and implicit compensation strategy after analyzing the examples in Brief Introduction to Qiyang County.Explicit compensation strategy refers to explicitannotations including transliteration plus annotation and literal translation plus annotation;implicit compensation strategy refers that the translator adjusts the original text by taking full use of all kinds of methods of the target language which includes paraphrase and amplification;the combination of explicit and implicit compensation strategy refers to the combination of explicit compensation strategy and implicit compensation strategy which includes conversion and free translation plus annotation.This thesis embarks from the basic concept of cultural default and translation compensation,and then analyzes the effects of compensation combined with the examples in order to provide guidance for the translation of publicity materials involved with cultural default.
