This thesis, based on the translation of the fourth chapter of Multimodality,Cognition, and Experimental Literature,is a translation report on academic discourse from the perspective of cognitive translation. In this book, the author,Alison Gibbons, raises the concept of multimodal cognitive poetics and demonstrates her research framework, which signals a new chapter of multimodality and cognitive study. As for the fourth chapter,it introduces the discourse analysis of multimodal cognitive poetics to a multimodality novel named House of Leaves. This chapter with a typical academic style, being informative and formal in language and creative in expression,is the major cognitive challenges the translator needs to handle. Therefore, acquiring the professional expressions and knowledge, clarifying the complicated logics, and producing concise and correct output should be the top consideration of the translator.Drawing on the cognitive theories and poetic analysis in the source text, the author realizes the value of cognitive translation and applied them to practice. In this sense, this translation report distinguishes itself from the common.Cognitive translation maintains that translation involves complex cognition, notably the cognitive processes of bilingual information transformation and processing. The process of translation is the process of cognition, which consists of two stages: understanding and expressing.Understanding of the source text involves getting the content as well as the cognitive processing of the source writer. As for the second stage,it requires the translator to take into account the cognitive ability and schema of the target reader and make a choice of proper expressions. This report is composed of four parts: introduction to the project, cognitive translation theory, translating practice under the guidance of cognitive translation, and conclusion. It proposes that cognitive equivalence should be given top priority to.To be specific,at the stage of understanding, empathy,in addition to literature review and professional analysis, should be engaged to reconstruct the cognitive processes of the source writer. When it comes to the second stage,i.e.expression stage, the translator should adopt the strategy of foreignization to convey the professional perceptions and notions of the writer. It is expected to take this translation project as a reference for the future practice of the same type.
