| The concept of light verb was initiated by Otto Jespersen,a Danish linguist.The research of Chinese light verbs was started by Lv Shuxiang who viewed such verbs as dummy verbs with weak lexical meaning and a certain syntactic function.Zhu Dexi called them as weak verbs.According to the definition of light verb and the usage of Jinxing,Jinxing has both the properties of light verb and non-light verb.However,most of the previous researches on Jinxing are grammatical or about its property as a light verb,hardly dealing with its translation.At present,in the few translation studies,Jinxing has been taken as a light verb merely.This research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches.Firstly,it classifies the Jinxing structures on basis of Diao Yanbing’s classification and conducts a relatively comprehensive and systematic study on the translation of Jinxing based on the corpus.And then it takes Howard Goldblatt’s translations and the English version of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung as the data to verify the findings above and explore possible inspirations of this research for future studies from the perspective of Adaptation Theory.This research finds that Jinxing as a light verb tends to have no linguistic correspondence in the translations.However,it is often translated into a heavy verb when it is a heavy verb.What’s more,it also finds that the translator’s mother tongue,thinking mode and culture influence his or her translation process.In other words,the translation of an English-speaking translator or a Chinese-speaking translator reflects the thinking mode and aesthetic view of his or her own people.The research shows that it is important for translators to understand the differences between the SL and the TL and make certain adaptation to the target language and culture for successful translation. |
