Lady Chatterley’s Lover,as the last long novel of D.H.Lawrence,remains a controversial novel out of its explicit description on sex.Actually, the intention of Lawrence of writing this novel is neither to describe sex itself nor to satisfy the masses’vulgar taste, and the bold and explicit sexual description in this novel is only a method for Lawrence to highlight his writing intention----restoring people’s humanity through love and love-making and calling on people to get rid of the shackles of industrial civilization and struggle for the emancipation of human nature.Hence, the main purpose of this novel is in accordance with the spirit of Bakhtin’s theory of carnivalization. And in order to highlight the writing intention,a variety of artistic methods have been used in the novel. However, for a relatively long period of time, attention has only concentrated on the sexual description in this novel and other artistic features of this novel has been ignored to a large extent. In order to fill in the blank, this thesis pays attention to the carnivalistic features of this novel and selects Yang Hengda and Yang Ting’s translation as the case for study, trying to explore how these carnivalistic features are retained or reproduced in translation. At first, this thesis introduces precious studies on the translation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover,on Bakhtin’s theory of carnivalization and on relations between translation and carnivalization. Then, the thesis touches upon the origin, features and some basic concepts of carnivalization.Next, the thesis makes a brief introduction to the translated text, the translator and the social and cultural context of the translation so as to lay a foundation for the case study.Later, the thesis analyzes the carnivalistic features of the original text from different aspects.Last but not least, this thesis presents and analyzes abundant examples embodying the carnivalistic features of the novel(including dialect, billingsgate,French or Latin words, sexual description and self-created compound words)and then generalizes the translation strategies or methods adopted by the translator to retain or reproduce the carnivalistic characteristics of the original text. This research finds that in terms of the five categories of elements mentioned above which embody the carnivalistic features of the novel, the translation strategies or methods adopted by the translators Yang Hengda and Yang Ting in the new social and cultural context of the 21st century are quite different from those of earlier Chinese versions and these translation strategies or methods fully retain or reproduce the carnivalistic characteristics of the original novel. This thesis provides a new perspective for translation analysis by connecting Bakhtin’s theory of carnivalization with translation.Besides, this thesis also contributes to better translation of literary works with carnivalistic features by analyzing and summarizing the translation strategies or methods adopted in certain well-accepted translation.
