| Word class categorization, especially concerned with the multiple class membership, has always been the top priority in linguistic categorization studies.Multiple class membership refers to grammatical multifunctionality of a polysemous word type or lexeme which belongs to two or more word class categories in communal lexicon at langue and is usually represented as heterosemy in dictionaries.Verb-noun heterosemy in Japnaese(akaサ変动词or dōmeishi)refers to the polysemous lexemes assigned with both verb and noun classmembership collected in Japanese dictionaries.Studies on verb-noun heterosemy have heavily relied on morphological paradigms and little investigation has been conducted from the perspective of lexicography. In view of this, based on the Two-level Word Class Categorization Theory, the present thesis has done a systematic empirical study on current status of verb-noun heterosemy in Modern Japanese by assistance of Meikyo Japanese Dictionary(2nd Edition). It is found that the totality of verb-noun lexemes labeled as?名?サ変动词?in MJD2 is 8,112,accounting for 12.78%of all the lexemes in this dictionary.Besides, the ratio of verb-noun lexemes to verb lexemes is 1.73:1.On microstructure representation, problems primarily arise from the establishment of senses. There is no subdivision of senses denoting nominal usages and verbal usages respectively. In most cases, the verbal usages of Japanese verb-noun lexemes have been implied in illustrative examples. What’s more, synchronic cross-linguistic comparison based on dictionaries demonstrates that verb-noun heterosemy accounts for a higher proportion in Modern Japanese,as an agglutinative language, than in Modern Chinese, belonging to the family of analytic languages. Some homographic lexemes of synonymy relationship have been labeled with different word classes in Modern Chinese and Modern Japanese dictionaries. The present thesis has investigated the representation of verb-noun heterosemy in Modern Japanese dictionaries on basis of MJD2,which could not only present the situation of verb-noun heterosemy in Modern Japanese but also deepen the studies on word class categorization in Modern Japanese.Additionally, this research could also contribute to the in-depth theoretical studies on multiple class membership in Modern Chinese and on ground of this,in lexicographical practice, the treatment of verb-noun lexemes with self-reference usages in Modern Chinese dictionaries will also be improved. |
