The film Muholland Drive, directed by David Lynch, tells the story of Diane who is an unnamed actress in Hollywood. She has some ups and downs of life and undergoes the betrayal of lesbian lover Camilla. She is always wandering on the edge of fantasy and reality so that she becomes a split subject and finally ends her life. The uniqueness of the film is that it alternates between reality and fantasy. And also it blurs the boundaries in a fragmented way and gives it a profound meaning to seemingly messy pieces. From the perspective of fantasy and desire, this dissertation analyzes the classic fragments of the film with Lacan's and Zizek's theories and explores the necessity of the split subject Diane, constructed by desire and fantasy and driven by objet petit a.The body is made up of three sections. The first section is about Diane's fantasy world. And it reveals that Diane's desire staged on the fantasy is the Other's desire. The second section points out the signifier of Diane's desire, analyzes the deadlock of Diane's desire and further probes the cause of Diane's desire. The third section, using the theories of objet petit a and jouissance, shows that Diane is on the verge of mental illness. To escape the haunted objects,Diane commits suicide to end her tragedy life. From the above-mentioned analysis, the dissertation draws a conclusion that fantasy, desire and objet petit a provide a battle field for the split subject Diane and it leads to the necessity of Diane's destruction.
