A Lesson Before Dying is a rifacimento of novel by Romulus Linney,a American fam ous dramatist.And was interpreted as a drama script by Professor Fan Yisong,Shangh ai Theatre Acadamy.The original novel is A Lesson Before Dying written by Ernest J.Gaines,the contemporary black writer.Yang Yu and I chose this drama as our graduate piece for our master degree.This drama is a story about the process of saving the soul of Jefferson,a black child.We adjusted and revised the origin according to the theme we would like to express while rehearsing.A Lesson Before Dying is a work full of the consideration of humanity.Innocent Jefferson was regarded murdering someone else and sentenced to death just because of the racial discrimination and institutional deficiency.At the trial,the dignity of being a human of Jefferson even went crushed just by only one sentence from the lawyer.At the drama,the black nanny Emma,the black teacher Grant,the black priest Ambrose and the yellow race teacher Vivian take measures to save the soul of Jefferson,the man losing dignity and going to die.And their action reflects different attitudes towards the institution,life,dignity and spirit.This thesis proceeds the discourse of the whole conception of setting the roles in this drama,including the overview of this work,analysis of the characteristics,image-building and the practical significance of this drama.
