Conversational Implicature As An Approach To Fictional Dialogue Translation

Dialogues as an extremely significant element in in fictions,plays an irreplaceable role in describing figures and demonstrating specific information.With them a writer highlights such elements as background,identity,personality,or psychological state,which might reveal his deeper intentions.In the process of translating a fiction work,the quality of dialogue translation determines,to a great extent,the quality of the whole translation.It is of profound meaning to study on fictional dialogue translation from the perspective of what dialogues imply or indicate.This thesis utilizes the theory of Conversational Implicature and its rule underlying conversations to study fictional dialogue translation,with Hemingway's classic A Farewell to Arms as the case since dialogues take a proportion of over 60 percent of the whole work.Lin Yijin's translated Chinese version will be analyzed due to its highest popularity through the past decades Studies on Lin's translation are rather limited,let alone studies targeting dialogue translation.On such a practical basis,this thesis aims to utilize the theory of conversational implicature to carry through a case study about the dialogue translations in Lin's version.Through the classified analysis,this thesis finds that the meaning and context play a significant role in the Conversational Implicature theory,and the Cooperative Principle and its four maxims are of guiding and evaluating significance to the translation of dialogue in novels.A translator may employ the theory to assist his better comprehension and representation of the connotational meaning.In the meantime,the audience also possess a tool to more objectively judge the efficiency of a translation and to find out the aim or strategy of the translator.
