Since Holmes officially proposed two terms——“socio-translation studies”and“translation sociology”in 1972,translation studies in sociological approach have experienced about two-decade-year accumulating period and eventually got to the central position from the periphery of translation studies field with the impetus of“cultural turn”in translation studies and the deepening of descriptive translation study.Theo Hermans is one of those scholars who firstly applied social system theory into translation studies.Basing on the critical and comprehensive analysis of theories which employ systematic thinking like Even Zohar’s polysystem theory,Hermans has rationally introduced Luhmann’s social system theory(SST)into translation studies and has primarily acquired theoretical achievements. The novel 1984 written by reputed British novelist George Orwell and published in 1949 is generally acknowledged as the most conspicuous political satire prophecy of dystopia and anti-totalitarianism in the 20th century. The E-C version of 1984,translated by the prominent translator Dong Leshan, has received highly appreciative comments and has been regarded as the most classical E-C version since it was formally published in 1985.This thesis applies Hermans’s system theory(ST)into the study of classic of literary translation(CLT)and carries out canonicity analysis on Dong’s translation of1984,aiming at exploring the pivotal factors and hidden reasons contributing to the canonical status of Dong’s translation. This thesis thinks of classic of literary translation as an autopoietic system unified by autonomy, heteronomy and in-betweens.The autonomy of system of literary translation classic focuses on the inner factor and structure of translated text, which appears as the existence form of canonical translation’s noumenon and can be utilized repeatedly. In parallel, the heteronomy of translation system, which is considered as obbligato and external conditions dynamically shaping classical literary translation, concentrates on the outer influences on the text. The in-betweens are influenced by both of two systems simultaneously. The virtuous and sound operation of autonomy and heteronomy and positive in-betweens in the system of literary translation constructs classical status of the Dong’s translation of1984.
