Great changes happened in the Republic of China in Chinese history.After the New Cultural Movement,translated literature was regarded as an important means of literary revolution by advocates;translated novels was endowed with new functions of inspiring wisdom and reforming society.In 1934,World Literature was started by Wu Lifu,which was issued by Liming Publishing House,becoming an important venue for introducing foreign outstanding works.This thesis will take Babbitt serially published in World Literature written by American writer Sinclair Lewis as a case study,which won the Nobel Prize for Literature for the first time in the history of the United States of America in 1930.Babbitt depicts the interest relationship of the capitalist society.The author describes the American life style at that time with humor and irony,which satirizes bourgeois vulgar and human indifference.The source text is imbued with fine language,rigorous logic,and various detail descriptions.Based on DTS and literary polysystem theory of Cultural Schools,this thesis mainly discusses translation style of Babbitt translated by Hong Shen and Ji Zechang from the aspects of main social and cultural context,the translator's aesthetic appreciation,translation strategies and translation techniques.Domesticating translation and foreignizing translation are complementary in dealing with culture-loaded words,rhetoric appreciation,and languages,together with frequent use of transliteration and transcription,combination of positive and negative translation,metaphrase and paraphrase,and addition and omission.Language is simple and plain,not gorgeous.The words are straightforward and easy to understand.
