On The Mediostructure Of Culture-specific Words In C-E Dictionaries From The User's Perspective

Cultural-specific words carry rich cultural connotations,whose comprehensive interpretation and accurate translation have always been an inevitable problem both in lexicology and translatology.Nevertheless,throughout the researches on the definition situation of cultural-specific words in mainstream C-E dictionaries,it turns out that English equivalents alone,provided in definition part in microstructure,are not sufficient to systematically map and properly transfer the rich cultural information contained in these special words due to their semantic structure and culture implications.Mediostructure is propitious to represent various lexical semantic relations fractured in dictionaries and reestablish lexical semantic network in natural language,which is to better accord with user's cognitive law and the acquisition mechanism of vocabulary.Taking Confucian words and biblical words for example,on the one hand,descriptive statistics is adopted in this thesis aiming at the current situation investigation of mediostructure representation both in C-E dictionaries and E-C dictionaries.On the other hand,contrastive analysis is also used to figure out the differences existing in the mediostructure representation of Confucian words in C-E dictionaries and biblical words in E-C dictionaries in order to provide a realistic basis for the improvement and perfection of mediostructure construction in C-E dictionaries,on the basis of Multidimensional Definition Theory and The Spreading Activation Theory.It is found that there exists significant difference in several aspects like morphological network construction,conceptual spreading activation,syntactic framework construction and pragmatic structure marking through stratified sampling,contrastive analysis and data confirmation.Thus,this paper,based on Multidimensional Definition Theory and The Spreading Activation Theory,is devoted to continuously improve and enhance existing representational model of mediostructure for Confucian words after consummating hierarchy system of mediostructure and strengthening the systematic relevance of structural components.Moreover,it is also conducive to expand the theoretical study of Confucian words in C-E dictionaries,improve the compilation quality of C-E dictionaries and even bilingual dictionaries and facilitate the international promotion,overseas dissemination of traditional culture as well.
