Traditional Propositional Symbol Theory proposes that conceptual representation is independent of peoples’ sensory-motor system and is stored in language and memory as abstract symbols.Meaning derives from amodal symbols. However,Perceptual Symbol System states that people understand language by perceptually representing the situation described by language in recent years. Some of previous studies that include implicit object color information in language comprehension mainly focus on sentence processing with nouns containing color information, and few researches about word processing or picture categorization has been conducted. This study based on Perceptual Symbol System attempts to figure out effects of embodied semantic information of object nouns on categorization tasks of object nouns-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity from the perspective of the Simulation Semantics. To be specific, four questions are:(1)Does embodied semantic information of object nouns affect categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity under non-priming condition?(2)Does embodied semantic information of object nouns affect categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity under English priming condition?(3)Does embodied semantic information of object nouns affect categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity under Chinese priming condition?(4)Is there any difference of categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity between English and Chinese priming conditions? The present study adopts a 3(priming condition: non-priming,English word priming, and Chinese word priming)× 4(perceptual cues validity: low, half low, half high,high)within-participant design. The behavioral and ERPs data are considered as dependent variables. It contains three experiments(i.e.non-priming,English word priming, and Chinese word priming)conducted in Key Lab of Cognitive Neuroscience & Foreign Language Learning,Brain & Language Research Center(BLRC),Sichuan International Studies university(SISU).The results are as follows:(1)The behavioral data show that in non-priming condition, the reaction time of picture categorization tasks under the HV condition is shorter than that under other conditions, which illustrates that there is difference in categorization tasks of pictures with different perceptual cues validity. In English priming condition, there is no difference of reaction time of picture categorization under English priming condition [F(3,54)=1.345,p=.269>.05].In Chinese priming condition, there is no difference of reaction time of picture categorization tasks under Chinese priming condition [F(3,54)=.762,p=.052﹥.05],which shows that there is no effect on categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity in English or Chinese priming condition.Compared with English and Chinese priming condition, there is a significant difference(p=.012﹤.05)in categorization tasks of pictures at the level of HHV between English and Chinese priming conditions, which indicates that there is a significant difference of categorization tasks of object noun-based picture with different perceptual cues validity between English and Chinese priming conditions.(2)ERPs data show that in non-priming condition,HHV condition elicits a lager N100 than HLV and LV condition in N100;LV condition elicits a smaller positive P200 component when compared with HV,HHV,and HLV;HLV causes a smaller N300 component when compared with HV,HHV,and LV;HV causes a larger N400 component when compared with HHV,HLV,and LV.It demonstrates that embodied semantic information of object nouns affect categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity under non-priming condition. In English priming condition,LV elicits a smaller N100 when compared with other conditions.HV elicits a smaller positive P200 and N400 when compared with other conditions. It illustrates that embodied semantic information of object nouns affect categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity under English priming condition. In Chinese priming condition,HHV elicits a smaller N100 when compared with other conditions.HLV elicits a smaller P200 when compared with other conditions.HV elicits a smaller N300 when compared with other conditions.LV elicits a smaller N300 when compared with other conditions. It shows that embodied semantic information of object nouns affect categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity under Chinese priming condition. When comparing English and Chinese priming conditions, there is a significant effect between English and Chinese priming over amplitude under HHV and LV condition in N100;a significant effect between English and Chinese priming over amplitude under HV,HHV,and LV condition in P200;a significant effect between English and Chinese priming over amplitude under HHV,HLV,and LV condition in N300;and a significant effect between English and Chinese priming over amplitude under HV,HHV,HLV and LV condition in N400.It indicates that there is a difference of categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity between English and Chinese priming conditions. All in all,the embodied semantic information of object nouns affects the categorization tasks of object noun-based pictures with different perceptual cues validity.
